Billy M. May, 82, died on April 10, 2017 at Country Meadows of York, South. He was the husband for almost 59 years to the late Patricia A. (Sheats) May who passed on April 16, 2016.

Born on November 26, 1934 in Gardners, PA, he was the son of the late Michael and Margaret "Maggie" (Day) May.

Billy was a graduate of York Vo-Tech and the Harrisburg Barber School and was a barber at Stony Brook Barbershop for 49 years. He loved his profession and his customers were like family to him. Anywhere Bill went in York, he always knew somebody.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1963 as an infantryman.

He enjoyed deer hunting and looked forward to his fishing trips to Chincoteague and Ocean City.
Without a doubt, his favorite sport was wrestling. He was a strong supporter of the Dallastown Wildcat Team for over 45 years, where he cheered on numerous wrestlers throughout their career, including his grandsons, whom he was very proud of both on and off the mat. Despite his declining health, his goal was to see his youngest grandson finish his high school wrestling career this year. Bill accomplished that goal and was able to watch Bryce's matches and see his medal at the state tournament.

Bill is survived by three daughters, Theresa A. Davis and her husband, Troy of Wrightsville, Pamela S. Heiser of Lancaster and Vickie L. Shields of York; seven grandsons Joseph Michael May Aldinger, Matthew Davis, Jarrod Davis, Jason Shipley, Jared Shipley, Nicholas Shields and Bryce Shields; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Kay Wolfordt and her husband, Ronald of TN, Connie Hurley of Carlisle, Vonnie Harbold of York and Sandie Ebersole and her husband, Ron of Gettysburg; a brother-in-law, Dr. Garry Bidler of Chambersburg.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Stella Shellehammer; and two brothers, Darby and Mikey Day.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 14, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York. Viewings will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 10 to 10:30 a.m., both at the funeral home. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with graveside military rites conducted by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.

Bill was a resident of Country Meadows York, South for the past two years and developed many strong friendships. He was truly blessed to be surrounded by compassionate and loving staff who truly cared for and supported him.
