Dorothy's parents were Earl Jacob Hofert and Helena Strietelmeier. Her maternal grandparents William Strieteleier and Fredricke Hilgediek were born in Germany. Dorothy's siblings were Earl and Hazel. Dorothy married Harry Joseph Letterman in 1942. Together they had three children, Janice, David and Gretchen Letterman. Dorothy helped her husband a florist and worked as a secretary at her church. Harry passed away in 1973. Dorothy remarried Hans Mengering a retired engineer in 1983. Hans passed away in 2013. She is the mother of David Letterman of "The Late Show with David Letterman." Dorothy appeared on the show a few times as David's mom. When asked about the popularity of Dorothy on The Late Show she replied "The positive response to my appearances on David's show has nothing to do with my amateur abilities as a broadcaster. People enjoy seeing a mother and son together. It's that simple." Dorothy wrote a cookbook "Home Cookin' with Dave's Mom" in 1996. Dorothy was 95 years old. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
