Opera Singer, 7th Baronet of Kilfane. A tenor, he was noted for his performances in the early Gilbert and Sullivan operas with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. Born the 4th son into an aristocratic family, his father was the 5th baronet of Kilfane in County Kilkenny, Ireland. Following his formal education at Cheltenham College in Gloucestershire, England and Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, he relocated to Italy where he trained as a singer from 1873 until 1876. He made his stage debut in 1876 at the Teatro Manoel in Malta, singing the role of 'Count Almaviva' in "The Barber of Seville." The following year he appeared at Her Majesty's Theater in London, England, in Thomas Haynes Bayly's English version of Adolphe Adam's opera "The Swiss Cottage." In 1878 he joined Richard D'Oyly Carte's Comedy-Opera Company in London where he most famously created the roles of 'Ralph Rackstraw' in "H.M.S. Pinafore" (1878) and 'Frederic' in "The Pirates of Penzance" (1880). After leaving the D'Oyly Carte Company in October 1880, he went on to give performances in other operettas, including "Out of Sight" (1881), "Claude Duvall" (1881), and "When One Door Shuts Another Opens" (1885). During this time, he also taught voice lessons. When his oldest brother died in 1903, he inherited the family title. In 1915 he married Eva Boulton, the daughter of Baronet Sir Samuel Bagster Boulton. He died at the age of 81 and was interred in the Boulton Family Vault at Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey, England.
