Son of Christopher C. Wimbish Sr., a customs collector, and Maggie Baker Wimbish, a leading Atlanta educator. He was a graduate of Howard University in Washington D.C. and worked in insurance. He served in WW I, commissioned as a first lieutenant and served with the 366th Infantry Regiment, 92nd Division, an African American infantry division

After the war, he received a law degree from Northwestern University and practiced law in Illinois. He was elected to the Illinois State Senate from the Third District in 1942 and served until 1954.
