Raleigh Franklin Lane, Jr. was the son of Jane Stout Jones and Raleigh Franklin Lane, Sr.
Sister Sallie Jane Lane Metcalfe-Burdette (1935).
Raleigh is a graduate of Eastern High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and a graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he was President of the Student Congress and the President of Phi Delta Theta Kentucky Epsilon. An avid Wildcat basketball fan.
Raleigh was a member of the 82nd Airborne division paratroopers. He was employed with the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in Louisville before being transferred to Nashville in 1963, where he was a freight traffic agent at Union Station. In 1968, he joined Third National Bank where he became an executive vice-president. He is a graduate of Stonier Graduate School of Banking and the National Commerical Lending Graduate School.
Raleigh married Elizabeth "Becky" Weaver of Nashville. They were married for fifty years. To this union two daughters were born, Elizabeth Lane McAlister and Kathryn Lane Berschback. Grandfather of Elizabeth "Libby" Craig McAlister, Mary Roberts McAlister, Raleigh Lane Berschback, and Donald Francis Berchback III.
Raleigh served on the board of directors of Duck Unlimited, The Cumberland Valley Girl Scouts, The Boy Scouts of America, The Middle Tennessee Heart Association, and The Massey School of Business at Belmont University.
Raleigh had a great love of storytelling and publish a collection of children's stories orally passed down from his father, fulfilling a lifelong dream. A true outdoorsman, Raleigh loved to hunt and fish, spending countless hours at his beloved Glory Farm at The Narrows of the Harpeth with his Labrador retrievers. He shared his love of hunting and fishing with both of his daughters, sons-in-laws, and his four grandchildren, taking them on hunting and fishing trips around the world.
Raleigh invented and patented The Duck Plucker with his friend A.J. Baird in 1974. Prior to selling the patent to the duck plucker to Orvis, he appeared as a guest on What's My Line as the inventor of The Duck Plucker. He had numerous hobbies including golf, beekeeping, banjo playing, metal detecting, coin collecting, and a model airplane builder. He also was an avid reader and especially enjoyed Civil War history.
Raleigh was a man of great personal integrity and faith. He had a zest for life and was a consummate gentleman.
