He was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Tucker County, at St. George and was a son of the late James Raymond Bowman and Theadocia Metz Bowman. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force, 84th Air and Rescue Squadron from 1951 to 1955. He was a West Virginia State Trooper from March 26, 1956 until his retirement on March 30, 1977. He also spent 31 years working with the U.C.A.A.P. (United Church Alcohol Action Program) and T.A.A. (Teens Against Alcohol and Drugs) program. He was a Lay Speaker and Soul winner right up to his death.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Leona R. "Judy" Bowman; one son, Jeffrey Bowman (Connie) of Scott Depot, W.Va.; one daughter, Tracy Bowman of Charleston, W.Va.; one grandson, Christopher Keith Bowman of Scott Depot, W.Va.; one sister, Eleanor Faye Clark of Fairmont, W.Va.; two step-children, Donny Nichols of Mt. Zion, W.Va. and Sherry McCroskey of Grantsville; three step-grandchildren, April Whipkey, Brad McCroskey and Dustin Nichols, all of Grantsville; four step-great-grandchildren, Joseph, Allie, Autumn and Avery Whipkey, all of Grantsville; five nieces; two nephews; and several cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Lee Clutter Bowman for 35 years; three sisters, Mary Jane, Delores Rose and Betty May; and a brother, Howard "Bill" Bowman.
He enjoyed camping, fishing and anything the kids wanted to do.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Stump Funeral Home in Grantsville. Pastors Greg Swisher and Bryan Blair will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2012 and on Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
