Robert "Howard" Keener, 89, passed away peacefully, April 9, 2017 at Frye Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his wife, children and other family members, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Catawba County, Maiden, NC, February 28, 1928, he was the son of the late Robert Emanuel Keener and Velma Cline Keener Ross.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilma Keener; and sisters: Lorene Griffey, Mildred Workman, and Mary Campbell.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Howard was a member of Viewmont Baptist Church where he served as deacon, teacher and other committees. He loved his church and people but had been unable to attend for some time. He was also a member of Gideon's International.

Mr. Keener was the owner/operator of Howard Keener Auto Repair. He was a transmission specialist. He was an avid gardener and loved his rose garden. Anything outside was for him and in later years became an avid bird watcher.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 42 years, Gwyndolyn (Gwyn) Griffin Keener; sons: Terry (Jamie) Keener of Newton, NC, Eric Keener of Maiden, NC; daughter Lisa Setzer of Hickory, NC; seven grandchildren: Tina Rivera of Troutman, Tara Keener of Matthews, NC, Tyler Keener of Newton, NC, Taylor (Daniel) Houser, Chris (Kelly) Keener of Maiden, NC, Justin (Dana) Keener of Mt. Holly, NC, Wendy (Brandon) Jessmer of Raleigh, NC; eleven great-grandchildren: Dominic, Adrian and Gabriel Rivera, Avery Houser, Kristen, Austin and Jacey Keener, Layla and Zachary Keener, Elijah and Jackson Jessmer.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at Viewmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Earl Davis and the Rev. Dr. Jay Robison officiating. The body will lie-in-state from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Post 48, where he was a member.
