Chester Otto Street, 89, of Paducah died at 9:10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

He retired in 1984 after 37 years as a union boilermaker with the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers’ Local Lodge 40.

Mr. Street was a faithful member of Milburn Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years. Along with serving several terms as an elder, he had also been a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and drove the church van for many years. He participated annually in the church’s efforts as a collection point for the Rev. Franklin Graham’s Operation Christmas Child ministry. Mr. Street also volunteered his time as Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts Troop 21, based at the church, in the 1960s.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge in Greenville, Mo., for more than 50 years.

Mr. Street was a U.S. Navy veteran. In World War II, he fought aboard LST 197 and LST 1067. He saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters, participating in the invasions of Sicily; Anzio and Salerno, Italy; Casablanca, Morocco; and Normandy, France. Mr. Street was among the group of Kentucky’s World War II veterans who visited their memorial as part of the WWII DC trip to Washington, D.C., in May 2004. In November 2010, he received the Court Award from the McCracken County Fiscal Court and the Duke of Paducah award from Mayor Bill Paxton in recognition of his service to the military and to his community. Mr. Street was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Lowndes, Mo., but he had lived in Paducah since 1952.

His devoted wife of nearly 65 years, Mary Street, survives him. They were married Feb. 23, 1946.

Other survivors include two sons, Randy Street and his wife, Cathy, of Hardin, and Ronald Street and his wife, Karen, of Heath; one daughter, Kim Street of Paducah; daughter-in-law Ginger Street of Benton; two sisters, Frieda Dickerson of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Geneva Ball of Ortonville, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Libby Turner and her husband, Bill, of Benton; Robert Lemons and his wife, Kim, of Scott Depot, W.Va.; Ryan Street and his wife, Bekah, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Shelley Byrne and her husband, Paul, of Heath; Randy C. Street of Benton; and Kari and Kristi Street, both of Heath; and seven great-grandchildren, Hillary Turner, Isaiah Wren, Kady and Zack Lemons, Jack and Jet Street and Drew Byrne.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Greg Street and infant Chester Bruce Street, as well as two brothers and three sisters. His parents were William Samuel and Rosa Catherine (Barker) Street.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with the Revs. Doug Hughes and Allie Rudolph officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Old U.S. 45.
