She was born on Oct 3, 1947 in Jacksonville, FL. She married her high school sweetheart, Charles Mathews, on Nov 12, 1965 in Marshall, TX.

She graduated from Byrd High School, Shreveport, LA, class of 1966. She continued on to Norton Business College in Shreveport, LA, where she excelled in academics and graduated in 1968. She worked as Executive Secretary for Network Long Distance and was quickly promoted to Human Resources Manager.

She was a leader in every organization that she was a part of – some of her noted positions included: President of the Business Professional Women's Club; President of the American Business Women's Association; Treasurer of the National Association for Women in Construction; and Treasurer of the Minden Germantown Festival for many years.

In her spare time, she was a gifted artisan in several fields – quilting, embroidery, and jewelry design. Her art portrayed American folklore and she was also a talented author of short stories and poetry.
