Hugh McGehee was a son of High and Sarah Shelton White McGehee, originally from Ogelthorpe County, Georgia. Hugh, Sr. was one of the patriarchs for the very large clan of McGehees who moved from that place to Panola County. Hugh, Jr. served in the Confederate Army as an officer. He married Julia Valette Little in late 1865. They became parents to three children: Julia Valette, Abner F., and Anna McGehee. Upon the death of Hugh's niece, Mary Starks Young in 1890, he and Julia took Mary's children to live with them: Stark and Julia Young. Much of Stark Young's childhood was spent in and around Como. As Stark Young became an accomplished writer, his childhood home with his McGehee family at Como was noted in at least two of his books: "So Red the Rose" and "The Pavillion."
