OBITUARY: James (Jim) Paul Abbott
January 5, 1936 ~ April 8, 2016

Died of complications from Waldenstrom's, a blood cancer.

Jim was born in Tacoma, Washington, graduated from Clover Park HS, and attended UW where he graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.

He met his future bride, Helen Waring, while they were both attending UW. After graduation they were married in Las Vegas in 1958.

As an ROTC Air Force second lieutenant his first tour of duty was Korea.

Upon returning, his second was Long Beach, CA, where their first son, Greg, was born.

Shilling AFB in Salina, KS, was next, then finally back to Seattle where he settled on Mercer Island and his 2nd son Mark was born.

Jim and Helen remained on Mercer Island for the last 54 years.

With his expertise in electronically controlled machinery and hydraulic equipment, he worked for a variety of companies, his favorite being Western Gear Machinery Co. where he worked for 20 years, rising to Senior Product Manager.

Jim had a love for life, his wife and family, friends and hobbies. Clubs, hobbies & memberships included Phi Kappa Sigma, handball at the WAC, Alpental volunteer ski patrol, Wranglers, Ancient Skiers, fishing at Tofino, and who could forget his Rotten Bunch.

After retirement he finally upgraded to his Grady White, known as the Shady Grady, he was known as the Fish Slayer.

Preceded in death by his brother Len.

Survived by his wife, Helen, sons Greg (Carrie) and Mark (Denice), sister Judy (Terry), and brother Keith (Lani). Grandchildren Joe Abbott, Lindsey (Tyler), Haley, Tim (Katie), and Jessica, and five great grandchildren.

The celebration of life will be Sunday, April 24th at Mercer Island Beach Club, 3:00-5:30pm.
