ALEXANDRIA BAY, N.Y. — Robert B. Wagoner, 95, of Wagoner Park Road, Alexandria Bay, died Friday morning, April 7, 2017, at his home under the care of Hospice and surrounded by his loving family.

Born Feb. 7, 1922, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Evard and Florence Dixon Wagoner, he graduated from Alexandria High School and attended Cortland College, majoring in physical education. He later received his master's degree at St. Lawrence University and held his career as the school administer at Indian River Central.

Robert served in the United States Army during World War II, earning the Bronze Star in the Battle of the Norwind, Purple Heart for wounds received in Heilbronn, and a Presidential Unit Citation for Norwind. He later served as lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves.

Robert married Ester Mance on Oct. 2, 1942. She passed away in August 1983. He married Ruth Woods in February 1984. Ruth passed away in October 2012.

He started Wagoner's Marina and Trailer Park on the family's homestead that has been in the family since 1885.

He was a founding member of the Theresa Rotary Club, founding member of AGATE, the New York State Association of the Gifted and Talented, member of Theresa Methodist Church, ran the Theresa recreation program for years, active with the American Red Cross, a member of the Antique Boat Association, and was a riverboat captain.

Surviving are his sons, Robert (Connie) Wagoner, Alexandria Bay; Timothy Wagoner, Alexandria Bay; Phillip (Kim) Wagoner, Pennsylvania; Rolf (Patty) Wagoner, Alexandria Bay; Kim (Dawn), Pennsylvania; his daughters, Penny (James) Wilson, California; Toni (John) Howard, Alexandria Bay; Kathy (Gene) Gamble, Adams Center, NY; Wendy (Keith) Honaker, Alexandria Bay; a sister, Nancy Dixon, Clayton Center; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A son, "Bumper" Wagoner, predeceased him, as well as a brother, Evard Wagoner.

Calling hours will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, at Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay. The funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, at St. Cyril's Church with Fr. Doug Comstock officiating.

Memorial donations may be made in Robert's name to the Alexandria Bay Fire Department, River Hospital, and St. Cyril Catholic Church.
