William Cheatham "Bill" Weaver III was the son of Elizabeth Wade Craig and William Cheatham "Big Bill" Weaver, Jr. Sister, Elizabeth "Becky" Weaver Lane.
Bill Weaver attended Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. Hutch School in Newport, Rhode Island. Graduated class valedictorian with a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of the South at Sewanee. Member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
William C. Weaver III was a well known community leader and philanthropist. Bill was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1977. Weaver said often "I may have MS, but MS doesn't have me." Bill's great grandfather C. A. Craig, was one of the founders of National Life and Accident Insurance Co. and his father was chairman of that firm, which started the WSM Radio show in 1925 to sell insurance.
After retirement from NLT Corp. in 1983 he devoted most of his energy and resources to philanthropy. A major benefactor to numerous causes that aimed to improve the lives of Nashville's less fortunate, and that is how he will best be remembered.
Mr. Weaver help start the Time to Rise program. This academically based, year-around initiative is designed to "help at-risk youth increase their life chances though academic excellence."
Bill and Nicky also funded the building of the YWCA's domestic violence center to provide a safe haven and resource for battered women. The building was named in their honor.
Aside from his charitable donations, Bill will also be remembered for his indomitable spirit. Not one to make excuses, Bill let his wheelchair propel him forward and not hold him back. Bill used to give rides to his children on his wheelchair on Halloween.
Bill was married to Nancy "Nicky" Johnson Weaver for thirty-nine years. To this union three children were born; Collins Weaver Hooper, Jane Craig Weaver Friedrich, and William Cheatham Weaver IV. Grandfather of Kathryn Eads Hooper, Margaret Livingston Hooper, Martha Myatt Hooper, William Cheatham Weaver V, Samuel Witt Weaver, Charles Cook Friedrich, and Collins Nickerson Friedrich.
Member of West End United Methodist Church.
