Eleanore L. “Ellie” Burns nee Stengel, age 92, passed away peacefully on April 7th.

Longtime Park Forest, IL resident formerly of Albany, NY. Retired from St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights with over 30 years of service as 6th Floor Head Nurse.

Wife for 67 years of Francis “Frank” Burns. Mother of Christine (Sam) Burns-Lehrfeld and Marianne (Stephen) Pope. Grandmother of Matthew (Alicia) Pope, Christopher (Whitney Howell) Pope and Rebecca (Brian) Kasper. Great-grandmother of Ainsley Pope and Benjamin Kasper. Sister of Dorothy Stengel, Helen (Herbert) Gaige and the late Mary Elizabeth (Oliver) Bond and Leo Stengel.

Ellie was a graduate of St. Peter’s Hospital School of Nursing in Albany during WWII. Upon her move to Park Forest in 1963, she began her career at St. James and served as an Officer with Park Forest Nurses Club. At the age of 60, Ellie returned to school, earning her Bachelor of Arts from St. Francis University in Lockport, IL. After retirement, she stayed active as a volunteer with the hospital. A proud member of St. Irenaeus Parish, she served on the Life Commission & Health Ministry, the Funeral Ministry and as a lector and greeter.

Her service to her family, her church and her community will long be remembered.

Resting at Panozzo Bros. Funeral Home, 530 W. 14th St. (U.S. Rt. 30, 3 blks E. of Western Ave.), Chicago Heights on Monday April 10th from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral Tuesday 9:15 AM to St. Irenaeus Church, 78 Cherry St., Park Forest. Mass 10:00 AM. Interment Assumption Cemetery, Glenwood.
