English Actor and Author. Pigott-Smith, who won the 1985 BAFTA best actor award for his performance as police superintendent Ronald Merrick in 'The Jewel in the Crown', had a prolific acting career that spanned 5 decades. He graduated from the University of Bristol in 1967 and went on to train at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School and began his professional career in 1969. From his first appearance in 1971 in 'Boswell’s Life of Johnson', he appeared regularly on television in series such as 'The Chief', 'Doctor Who', 'Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years', 'Bloody Sunday', 'North and South', 'Midsomer Murders', 'The Hour', 'The Vice and Inspector Lewis' and 'Decline and Fall'. Among films he had roles in were 'Sweet William' (1980), 'Clash of the Titans' (1981), 'A State of Emergency' (1986), 'The Remains of the Day' (1993), 'Gangs of New York' (2002), 'V for Vendetta' (2005), 'Quantum of Solace' (2008), 'RED 2' (2013) and 'Whisky Galore' (2016). Pigott-Smith, who wrote a diary which was published together with an anthology of poetry titled 'Out of India', also wrote two children's books, 'The Dragon Tattoo' and 'Shadow of Evil'. In 2017, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to drama. Just before his death from natural causes, he finished work on a television adaptation of the critically acclaimed play 'King Charles III', in which he played the title role.
