His early life around Indianola, Oklahoma, was difficult for this family of little means. Hard work on the farm was a daily routine that left little time for pleasure. Each child knew the meaning of hard work from an early age and also knew the parents would be harsh in their discipline if the children didn't do their part to help the family. Times were hard, but all chipped in and a great family unit survived and prospered.
Manuel and his older sister by two years, Helen Irmalee Woods Doyle played, worked and went to school together. They were inseparable until Manuel was drafted to serve in World War II in 1945 and marriage to Geraldine Pryor on November 17, 1950.
Of this union, two children were born, Dianna Woods West and Charles Fred Woods. They were the light of their parents eyes of course as most children are.
After serving his country in the army and receiving an honorable discharge for medical reasons and working several years at the Army Ammuntion Depot in McAlester, Oklahoma in the transportation department, Manuel was retired on disability in 1974. He and wife enjoyed a good life he so richly deserved after such a hard childhood.
Another thing he enjoyed in this life was the Masons. He was a member of the McAlester Blue Lodge No. 550 where he attained the degree of 32nd Mason. It was there also he had received his 50 years membership pin.
In November 2005, a year and a month after the death of his wife, Geraldine, he moved to Mounds, Oklahoma to be closer to his son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Lisa, and grandson, Jeffrey Woods, and a special friend and former exchange student, Bryan Woods.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Lisa Moss Woods, of Mounds; his daughter and son-in-law, Dianna and Paul West, of McLoud, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Paula Ann Cotney, Pamela Carter, Jeffrey Ryan Woods; three great-grandchildren, Siera Paige West, Dillon David Cotney, Dawson Hamilton Cotney; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Geneva Woods, and sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Monroe Doyle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Emma Woods; his wife, Geraldine Woods on December 7, 2004; two brothers, Dillard Woods, Gilbert Woods; sisters, Opal Woods and Nevada Irene Woods, and a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth West.
Services were held at 3 PM Monday, November 27, 2006, at Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Marvin Dunn officiating. Burial was at Choate Prairie Cemetery with Masonic services.
