WINGATE Betty Lou Wingate passed away May 4, 2009. She was preceded by her husband of 52 years Col. Charles Shelby Wingate. She was born November 1, 1935 to Emmett and Emma Mae Winchester in Carrabelle, Florida. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University in California with a Masters in Liberal arts. She taught English at Enterprise State Junior College in Alabama. She moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1990 and settled in Mandarin. She became a member of Church of Our Saviour, where she served on many programs, was a member of the Thursday Bible study, a Cursillo member, and a Daughter of the King. Betty served as President of the Mandarin New Comers Club and President of the River City Women's Club. Betty loved being a teacher and especially a mother. Her children were the flowers in her garden. Her five children survive her: Barry S. Wingate (Christine), Jerry W. Wingate (Jamie), Bobby L. Wingate (Tammy), Catherine A. Sharp (Bart), Patricia L. Gillam (Bob) and her brother Sidney A. Winchester (Bobbie Jean). She had fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Church of Our Saviour, 12236 Mandarin Rd. Jax, FL 32223. Father John Palarine will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Church of Our Saviour. Arrangements are under the care and trust of Hardage Giddens Mandarin Chapel, 904-288-0025.
