Veteran Civil War, 15th Iowa regiment, Inf. Company A. served at battle of Shiloh, Mississippi.

Commissioned First Lieutenant, Company A, 15th Iowa Infantry, Civil War, on October 28, 1861, at age 23. Resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native of Connecticut. Promoted to Captain and Regimental Quartermaster, February 20, 1862. Promoted to Major and Assistant Commissary of Subsistence, United States Volunteers, December 8, 1862.

He married his first wife, Lucy L. Sheets, on February 19, 1863, at Kane, IL

His third wife, and widow, was Mrs. Mary P. Bock, nee Allan, of Omaha, whom he married in 1898. She was 42 at the time of his death.

Mortimer died without a will. His son-in-law, Augustus Frederick Matschke, was named administrator.
