Harry Ryan Elliott, 93, passed away unexpectedly on March 28th in Knoxville. He was a wonderful loving husband, father and grandfather to his family as well as being a respected and prolific contributor to both his Church and Community. His infectious presence and spirit will be missed.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday April 7th at First Baptist Church of Knoxville with Reverends Bob Money and Dave Ward officiating and receiving of friends to follow immediately after the service. Inurnment will take place following a Committal Service and Military Honors at 11:30am on Tuesday April 11th at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 2200 E. John Sevier Highway.
Harry was born in Knoxville on May 2nd 1923. He attended Central High School in Knoxville graduating in 1942. He married Alma Jean on June 18th 1950 in Knoxville. Harry was a veteran of World War II and saw active duty in Northern France in the 66th Medical Corps. Honorably discharged from the Army in 1946, Harry moved on to follow in his father's footsteps at Cherokee Typewriter Company. Following his father's retirement, Harry ran the company until it's closure upon his own retirement. Harry could still be found cleaning and repairing typewriters until his passing, starred in an episode of the "Heartland Series" (entitled 'Vanishing Type') and was featured in many newspaper and magazine articles.
Harry was preceded by his parents, Harry Wilson Elliott and Lona Shipe-Elliott; and siblings Wilson, Alvin; and many cousins and family. Harry is survived by his son, John; daughter, Judy and her husband Kevin Buxton; grandchildren, Jonathan Elliott and Alison and her husband Mathew Self; step-grandchildren, Michaela, Tim and Sam Buxton; and great-grandchildren, Ezekiel Self, Gabriel Self and Arielle Buxton.
The family requests that any memorials should be given to the Alzheimer's Association and wish to express our sincere thanks to all who have provided support to Harry and his family over recent years. Serving the family, Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway.
