Margie C. Ferris, 84, of Port St. Lucie, Florida passed away on April 2, 2017.
Margie was born in Austin, Texas.
She was a kind, loving soul who was devoted to her family and who dedicated her life to providing care and support to others. Her compassion, spirit and joy for life will be greatly missed.
Born on February 2, 1933 to Carl E. Clinger and Amy P. Cox, Margie lived in Austin the majority of her life.
She graduated in 1949 from Austin High School, and in 1950, she was named as a Duchess of the Cotton Ball, representing the Austin A&M Mother's Club.
After briefly attending the University of Texas, Margie graduated in 1953 from the Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse the same year. She also completed post-graduate work at New York Polyclinic Medical School and Hospital in New York City in 1954.
Margie was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and the Order of the Rainbow for Girls.
Later, Margie graduated from then-Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University, San Marcos) with her bachelor's (May 1978) and master's (December 1982) degrees in health professions.
Margie had a long, successful career in healthcare. She was a registered nurse at Brackenridge Hospital, spending many years working as an ER nurse. Later, she worked in nursing education at Brackenridge and was responsible for the 10-county trauma center's disaster plan.
After she retired from Brackenridge, Margie moved to Brownsville, Texas to work for Brownsville Medical Center, where she was also an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She moved to San Marcos in 1995 and later worked as a nurse for the American Red Cross.
In 2002, Margie moved to Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Margie married Saadi Assad Ferris II on April 16, 1955, and they had three children.
The couple divorced in 1975, and Margie never remarried.
She was very active in the lives of her children and their friends as they grew up, including attending every football game, dance recital, band concert and theater production! Margie was a second mom to many and beloved by all.
Margie is survived by her children, Michael Ferris (of Austin, TX), his wife Bunny and their son, Nick; Kathy Pride (of Port St. Lucie, FL) and her son, Steven; and Ellen Ferris (of Providence, RI).
She is also survived by her brother, Ellsworth and his children, Brian, Marsha, Barbara and Leslie as well as nephews and nieces by marriage, including Sandy Farley, Carol Ferris Porter, Ann Ferris and Sheila Lyon Banghart.
In her final years, Margie was lovingly cared for by Edith Scott and the staff of Senior Paradise in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The family would like to thank Edith, Sabrina, Natalie, Janet and the rest of the staff for treating Margie like she was part of their own families. We took comfort in knowing our mother was in compassionate, loving hands, and she was happy in your care.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Friday, April 7, 2017 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress with Recitation of the Holy Rosary to begin at 7:00 pm.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with Reverend Dennis Strach II, CSC officiating.
Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery Annex.
