As a teenager he worked for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in Charlottesville, serving as a clear and assistant.
Paul enrolled in UVA for one tern during the 1878-1879 session.
He then headed west to Chicago in 1880 and initially was a coffee salesman. He then left the trade and purchased a seat on the Chicago Stock Exchange in 1896.
On June 26, 1891 Paul married Edith Clark. Mcintire's only child, Charlotte Virginia, was born in 1901. Edith and Paul later divorced.
In 1918 he moved back to Charlottesville, VA and in 1919 Endowed the School of Art and the School of Music at the University of Virginia.
On July 14, 1921 Paul married Anna Dearing Rhodes and they were happily married and living together in Charlottesville until her death in 1933.
He also Endowed the School of Commerce and Finance at the University of Virginia and served on the University of Virginia Board of Visitors from 1922 until 1934.
Paul received the French Legion of Honor in 1929
He met his third wife, Hilda Berkel Hall, shortly after moving to New York. They were married on April 18, 1934 and resided on East 57th Street in New York until his death.
