"Rick was born Aug. 23, 1967, in Sacramento, Calif., to Robert and Phyllis Platt. He died March 17, 2017, in El Dorado Hills, Calif., at the age of 49.

Rick grew up in the Rancho Cordova/Sacramento area. After graduation from Cordova High School in 1985, he worked for several years in construction and then installed phone systems and fiber optic wiring in commercial buildings. He studied computer sciences and graduated with honors from MTI, College of Business and Technology, Sacramento, in 1999, and began working for Intel in Folsom, Calif. He continued there for more than 17 years as a client services support engineer. He formed many friendships with co-workers and deeply appreciated their comradery. He gave caring support to his family, always willing to help no matter the task or event — doing yard work, building maintenance, cutting wood, maintaining computers and hiding Easter eggs.

Rick was interested in photography and created many beautiful and creative images during his travels and at family events. He enjoyed outdoor activities, including kayaking, jet skiing, hiking, scuba, whitewater rafting and four-wheeling on the Rubicon Trail. He loved to explore the sloughs and water channels by kayak on the lower Colorado River. Science and natural phenomena were fascinations, whether exploring slot canyons, searching for rock crystals, viewing the night sky or reading reports on the internet. Over the years, he traveled widely in North America and beyond – the Colorado Rockies, Utah national parks, Big Bend National Park, Arizona, British Columbia, Cancun, Hawaii, Washington D.C., New Zealand, Costa Rica, Israel, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Robert. He is survived by his mother, Phyllis and step-father, Ken Merrill; siblings, Julie (Jimmy) Nord, Holly (Tom) Young and Heather Merrill; uncles, Richard Bottorff and Loren (Shari) Bottorff; cousins, Melissa (Mike) Woodall and Rosemary (Dan) Colgrove; nieces, Jaclyn Nord, Julissa Nord, Bridget Freeman and Hyatt (Alex) Ames; and nephews, Christopher (Sarah) Nord, Stephen Nord and Jimmy (Tasha) Beckner. Rick will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, at Calvary Chapel, 6575 Commerce Way in Diamond Springs, Calif. Anyone wishing to honor his memory can donate to the American Heart Association, Salvation Army or another charity of their choice."
