Mrs. Joan Alice Daly Chandler, 83, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, and from noon to 1:00 pm on Friday, April 7, at the Osborn Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Keithville, LA. Officiating will be Monsignor Earl V. Provenza, V.F.
Joan was born October 12, 1933 to John L. Daly and Marion Randall in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was reared and educated in Shreveport attending Alexander Elementary School, Hamilton Terrace Junior High School, and C.E. Byrd High School.
Joan was preceded in death in 2015 by her husband of 60 years, Chester H. Chandler Jr.; her parents; her brother, Willard C. (Bill) Daly; and her younger son, James Daniel (Danny) Chandler. She is survived by her son, Chester III (Chet), and Chet's wife, Beth, of Tallahassee, FL.
Joan remained in Shreveport after graduating from high school. She worked for the M.L. Bath Company, Ltd., the United Gas Pipeline Company, and the Gary Production Company. Joan loved her country and participated in the democratic process serving for many years as a poll worker at the Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium polling location and as chairwoman of the Caddo Parish Republican Executive Committee in the early 70s.
Among Joan's many talents were her athletic skills. Many hours in her youth were spent swimming at the Shreveport Municipal Swimming Pool and playing sandlot football with neighborhood friends. In high school, she was an avid volleyball player. After high school, she achieved success in the sport of bowling, with her Falstaff Beer Bowling Team winning the annual City Women's Bowling Association team championship at the Shreveport Bowling Center. And years later, she took up the sport of snow skiing making annual treks to the Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado.
Joan had an infectious love for her flowers and garden. She was the consummate collector of plants, cuttings, and seeds, all to feed her beautiful yardscapes. For many years, she was a member of the Shreveport African Violet Society growing and showing her own violets. She loved horses and loved to make trips to the Oaklawn Park Horse Track in Hot Springs, Arkansas. She was also a serious numismatist collecting many fine coins and currency from the US Mint and several foreign countries.
Perhaps Joan's greatest contribution was her love and devotion to her family, particularly to her husband, Chester, and friends, and the many small animals that she encountered in life. Her charm of hummingbirds will surely miss her this summer. She offered love, encouragement, and kindness to all of her friends. She will be missed by many. May she rest at peace.
Pallbearers will be Frank Cicero Jr. and nephews, Bill Gary, Gerry Gary, and Mike Gary.
In lieu of flowers, please remember the patients of the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home and all of the wonderful pets in shelters.
