Alexander Birnie was a ship owner, with ships transporting goods to Australia and North America. Owner of the London mercantile firm of Alexander Birnie and Company which also operated the Waters & Birnie enterprise in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Alexander was born in Old Machar, Aberdeen, and died at Alpha Cottages, New Road, London, aged 71, and was buried 23 February 1835 at Bunhill Fields Cemetery (City of London Burials 1754-1855). Noted in the burial record as a nonconformist. Vault opened.
