CHARLOTTE, VT. - Roy A. Whitmore Jr., age 88, Professor Emeritus of Forestry at the University of Vermont, died on Sunday, April 2nd 1917 at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington, Vt.

Roy was born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 14th 1928, the son of Roy A. and Evelyn (Welsh) Whitmore Sr.

He moved in 1940 to Rego Park, NY, graduating from Bayside High School in January of 1946.

He immediately enlisted in the Navy Air Corp where he studied aerial photography and photo interpretation, a skill he would continue to use throughout his professional life.

After leaving military service in 1948, he enrolled at the University of Vermont, majoring in forestry which was then a two-year program.

He completed his education at the University of Michigan where he earned a B.S. in forestry in 1952 and a Master's in Forestry Utilization and Measurements in 1954.

He also completed course work at Southern Illinois University and the USDA graduate school.

His professional life began with the U.S. Forest Service where he worked in the Central States Forest Experiment Station as a research forester and forest economist in Columbus, Ohio, Carbondale, Illinois, New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Washington, D.C.

He left the Forest Service to accept a position as Associate Professor of Forestry at the University of Vermont in 1958.

During his time at the university, he taught many different courses. He also served on university committees and in various administrative roles including University Marshall, 1966-1981 and Forestry Department chair, 1975-1988.

Professional memberships included the Society of American Foresters in which he had been a member since 1951, earning a Golden Membership Award in 2004.

He was Secretary-Treasurer for the New England Chapter in 1987.

Other memberships were in the Forest Products Research Society and the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. Roy enjoyed teaching and mentoring his students, maintaining some ties over many years.

In younger years, Roy loved fishing and bird hunting, traversing fields and streams across the state of Vermont with friends.

He also cherished his Stowe canoe in which he and Roberta spent many happy days exploring, birding and botanizing along Vermont waterways.

After his retirement, Roy discovered the joys of cooking, both at home and at the Charlotte Senior Center.

He also had time to work in his woodshop turning out furniture for his home and gifts for friends.

He continued identifying wood samples for various museums and organizations well into his retirement years.

One of Roy's greatest interests was tracing his family genealogy. He was delighted to find he was a direct descendant, through his mother, of Major John Welsh who immigrated to this country in 1641, one of the original settlers of the state of Maryland.

He also traced his family on his father's side to Benjamin Widmer who immigrated to this country in 1716 from Switzerland via Holland under the patronage of William Penn. He did not talk so much about a fifth cousin, Wallace Warfield Simpson.

In August of 1953, Roy married Claire Suzanne Jacobsen whom he had met at the University of Michigan.

Together they had three children. Their marriage ended in December of 1983 with her early demise.

In July of 1987, he married Roberta Sullivan Fox.
