F. Ivan Ylinen, 93, of Duluth, died Monday, May 26, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born in New York Mills, Minn. on May 29, 1914 to Frank Arthur and Martha (Haarala) Ylinen. Ivan was a 1932 graduate of Duluth Central High School. He attended the former Superior State Teachers College for a year, and the University of Kentucky, where he was enrolled in pre-med. He played football at both schools. Ivan married Irene A. Jensen in June, 1939 in Duluth. He joined the Duluth Police Department, prior to serving in the Navy during World War ll. Following the war, Ivan returned to the Duluth Police Department, retiring in 1979, after nearly 40 years of service. Ivan recently converted to the Catholic faith, which was officiated by The Most Reverend Dennis Schnurr. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.

Ivan was preceded in death by his brother, John; his sisters, Lenore and Katherine; and his son-in-law, Don Knuckey.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; his son, Michael (Karen); his daughters: Judith Ann Knuckey, Mary Elizabeth Forgacs, and Colleen Louisa (John) Economos; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Ivan loved his grandchildren, and he loved watching football.

Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery
