John served as a private under Colonel George Washington at the Battle of Great Meadows at Fort Necessity July 3, 1754.

John is listed credited with 132 day service in 1774 payroll for members of Captain John Lowther's Company of VA militia who participated in Lord Dunmore's Ohio expedition in 1774.

John Powers was appointed one of the original trustees of Randolph Academy: In 1787, the Virginia General Assembly voted to establish Randolph Academy in Clarksburg, the first Academy created west of the Appalachian Mountains. Although the school was chartered in 1787, it was not actually built until 1793. Two important figures in the school's history include the school's first instructor, George Towers, an Oxford educated Presbyterian Minister, and Francis Pierpont, who served as Governor of the Restored Government of Virginia during the Civil War. Pierpont was later instrumental in the creation of the state of West Virginia. The original trustees of Randolph Academy included John Powers, Colonel Benjamin Wilson, George Jackson, and Nicholas Carpenter.

The next term of Court was held on the 21st day of September 1789 by Judges James Mercer and Richard Parker. The Grand Jury were John Pearce Duval - Gentleman, Foreman John Evans, Robert Ferrell, Henry Dering, John Davis, Thomas Butler, Thomas Chips, Charles Harriman, Benjamin Biggs, George Bealls, John Bukey, James Mitchell, William Haymond, John Powers, John Hall, George Jackson, John McCally, Edward Jackson and John Jackson.
Three Indictments were found at this term two for larceny and one for riot.

John Powers presented a commission from Governor Randolph as sheriff but reported that he was not able to procure security thereupon Thomas Cheney, George Jackson and John McCally were recommended to the Governor for the appointment.

Another Account of -FORT POWERS it was situated on Simpson's Creek, in Harrison County. It is supposed to have been erected by John Powers in 1771.
