Funeral services for Linda Cornelia Gordon Griggs, 75, will be held at Cedar Creek Baptist Church on Saturday April 8, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. She was the wife of Loran Alva Griggs. Visitation will be at Norton Funeral Home in Hartsville on Friday April 7, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Linda was born at home in the Cassatt, Kershaw County, SC on 13 April 1941. She was the daughter of the late Doby Edward Gordon Jr. and Juanita Ethelene Teal Gordon.

Linda was predeceased by her parents and by her son Jeffrey Loran “Chip” Griggs.

Linda was also predeceased by her in laws Colon Maxie Griggs and Ida Mae Johnson Griggs and Colon’s second wife Mary Frances Winburn Teal Griggs.

Linda and Loran were married at Cassatt Baptist Church on 4 November 1961. They lived in Columbia, SC before moving to Cocoa, Florida in the mid-1960s. Loran worked for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida and Linda worked at North American Rockwell at Cape Kennedy. After that, she was a stay at home mom for her two young children. She later taught kindergarten at the church they attended, Trinity Lutheran Church in Rockledge, FL (near Cocoa). They enjoyed bowling, fishing in the ocean, and taking their young children to Disney World.

In 1976, Linda, Loran, Lori, and Chip moved from Cocoa, Florida to Albany, Georgia. Linda worked for Ryder and Loran worked for Merck. After they retired, they moved to the Cedar Creek Community of Chesterfield County in October 1999 and joined Cedar Creek Baptist Church where Loran had attended in his early years.

Linda did needlepoint and ceramics in earlier years and enjoyed reading. She also enjoyed going on a girl’s vacation with her sisters Sara and Charlotte, her Aunt Mildred, her sister-in-law Shirley Watkins Gordon, and her sister-in-law Elaine Griggs Whittle.

Linda was a very kind, loving, gentle person that loved her family. She was always cordial to everyone she met.

Linda is survived by Loran, her husband of 55 years of the home, her daughter Lori Griggs of Villa Rica, GA, her step-daughter Sharon Lynn Parker of Renton, Washington, her grandchildren Cody Thyle Griggs of Carrollton, Georgia (fiancé Kristin Von Pelser), Lazarus Schechter of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Eilish Schechter of Thousand Oaks, CA.

Linda is survived by her four siblings (spouses): Sara Gordon Collins (Curtis, deceased) of Lugoff, SC, Doby Gordon III (Suzanne) of Cassatt, SC, Gene Gordon (Shirley) of Elgin, SC, and Charlotte Gordon Morris (Reverend William “Buster”) of Camden, SC.

Linda is survived by her sister-in-law Elaine Griggs Whittle (Marvin) of Hartsville, SC.

Linda’s nieces and nephews are: Angela Collins Ogburn (Barry) of Lugoff, Sandra Collins Watson (Vince) of Camden, Stacy West Gordon (Ann) of Graniteville, SC, Stephanie Gordon Martin (Bradley) of Camden, Ellen Gordon Keefer (William) of Camden, Ingrid Gordon Brantley of Columbia, Eric Gordon (Delia) of Sterling, VA, Gordon Morris (Susan) of Lugoff, Tarrant Morris (Gabriel) of Florence, and Phil Whittle of Hartsville.

Linda is also survived by her former daughter-in-law Amy McWilliams Griggs of Douglasville, Georgia.

Linda is also survived by her former son-in-law Michael Shechter (wife Jody) of Thousand Oaks, CA.

Visitation will be at Norton Funeral Home 1414 West Carolina Avenue Hartsville, SC 29550 on Friday 7 April 2017 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and at other times at the home 5756 Ousleydale Highway Hartsville SC 29550.

Funeral services will be held at Cedar Creek Baptist Church, 1635 Cedar Creek Road Hartsville, SC 29550 on Saturday 8 April 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Jeff Williams of Cedar Creek Baptist Church officiating. He will be assisted by Reverend Homer Hinson (former Cedar Creek pastor). Burial will be in Cedar Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

Pall Bearers will be Stacey Gordon, Eric Gordon, Gordon Morris, Tarrant Morris, Phil Whittle, and Barry Ogburn.

Memorials may be made to the playground equipment fund of Cedar Creek Baptist Church.
