Jane B. Riedel McDonald, Dunmore, died Sunday morning in Green Ridge Gardens Health Care Center, Scranton. Her husband, the late Joseph P., died May 5, 1986. The couple had been married for 37 years.

Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late Gus B. and Mary Ferguson Riedel, she was a member of the first graduating class of St. Mary of Mount Carmel School in 1940, a graduate of Dunmore High School in June 1944, and received her nursing diploma from Moses Taylor Hospital in 1947.

For many years, she worked part-time at Moses Taylor Hospital, Holy Family Residence and Laurel Hill Nursing Home. She also worked at Scranton Primary Health Care and Wellness Center, retiring at 75 years of age. She has served the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association .

She became a role model for her family, friends, church and community by serving as co-chairperson with her late husband on the Diocesan Synod II Commission. She also volunteered at the Diocesan Renewal Center in Elmhurst. She was a lector, Eucharistic minister, member of the Liturgy committee and served on the RCIA team. She was chairwoman for the RENEW process and served as president of the Women's Guild at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church.

After the tremendous demands of a very large family, all others came first. She was the personification of woman, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her gentle way, her steadfast faith and a quiet determination have accompanied her as she pursued all that she believed.

She is survived by her children, Deacon Patrick and wife, Ann Marie; Kevin and wife, Jeannie; Mary Frances, Maureen Guzzi and husband, Louis; Joanne McDonald Cordaro, Brian and wife, Janice; Beth Zangardi and husband, Tony; Erin Kreis and husband, Joseph; and Terry McDonald and wife, Jennifer, all of Dunmore; Jan Needham and husband, Tom, Roaring Brook Twp.; Kathy Scanlon and husband, Brian, Owego, N.Y.; Peggy Cuomo and husband, Michael, Elmira, N.Y.; son-in-law, Jim McCormick, Scranton; and daughter-in-law, Veronica McDonald, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 36 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Betty Cuff and Mary Lou McDonald; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Michael; her daughter, Nancy McCormick; her great-grandson, Ethan McDonald; brothers, Walter Riedel and Joseph Igoe; and a sister, Betty Smith.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Chestnut Street, Dunmore. Friends are asked to go directly to the church the morning of the funeral.

Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
