OBITUARY:
Maria Josefina Bautista Gray, age 79, passed away on March 11, 2017 in University Place, WA. One of ten children, she was born to Macario and Magdalena Bautista in Manila, Philippines on March 19, 1937. She graduated from Centro Escolar University in Manila.
In 1978, Josie received her Licensed Practical Nurse degree in Lawton, OK. She worked as a nurse in the mother/baby unit of Salem Hospital for over 25 years. Josie became well known for her cooking among friends, family, and the local community. Many often requested she bring pancit and/or lumpia to gatherings and holidays. She enjoyed reading and needlework as well as traveling with her family and friends. Josie also volunteered for many events around Salem, in particular the World Beat Festival.
Josie was known as "Lola" by her grandchildren and friends. She always welcomed people to her home and became mother/sister/aunt/grandma to countless friends. If you stopped by to visit around mealtimes, she simply added a place at the table. She hosted many holidays and welcomed soldiers (while a military wife), nurses and all her children's friends into the family.
Josie is survived by her children, Angela Gray Roarty, Natalie Haar (Dale), Mark Gray (Jennifer), and Joseph Gray; grandchildren Houston Gray, Emily Haar, Gabrielle Roarty, Bridget Gray, and Tristan Gray; siblings Melchor Bautista, Dionisia Columna, and Adoracion De los Santos; as well as former spouse and friend, Fredrick H. Gray.
She was predeceased by her parents and siblings: Anicia Rivera, Bienvenido Bautista, Maximino Bautista, Lamberto Bautista, Bonifacio Bautista, and Purificacion Bautista; and son-in-law Robert Roarty.
A graveside service for family will be held at Lee Mission Cemetery in Salem, Oregon.
