August J. "Gus" Galasso, 91, a Lancaster businessman and benefactor of Catholic education, died Wednesday (April 30, 2003) in St. Joseph Hospital, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness.

Born in Richfield, Conn., Galasso graduated from St. Mary's High School in Lancaster and St. Bonaventure University.

He and his brothers founded Lancaster Development, which specialized in road and bridge construction, and Cobleskill Stone, a downstate business that specializes in stone and blacktop products.

Galasso also started Susquehanna Motel Corp., which operated several hotels and motels in central and eastern New York.

Locally, he had several businesses over the years, including a liquor store, gas stations, a radio station, a bowling alley and movie theaters.
