Joyce E. Zimmerman, 89, passed away on Sunday, April 1, 2017. Joyce was born July 30, 1927 the daughter of Alvin and Theresa “Marie” Hathaway Walker in Vandalia, IL. She married Darrell D. Zimmerman on May 25, 1946, and he preceded her in death.
Joyce is survived by her loving children, Becky Zimmerman of Vernon, IL, Larry Zimmerman and wife Kay of Central City, IL; cherished grandchildren, Tina Burton and friend Kevin Rogers, Jimmy Shields and wife Lealani, Lisa Sargent, and Steve Cook; her devoted great-grandchildren, Jenna Edwards and husband Mike, Caidin Cook, Zoe Shields, and Hunter Shields; great-great-grandchildren, Isabella, Lukas, Daxton, Nolan, Ryan, and Carter; sister, Janice Pierce; sister-in-law, Bonnie Donnals; her precious niece and nephews.
Besides her husband, Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, brother, James Hathaway, sister, Tiny Denning, several brothers and sisters- in-law, and her only great-grandsons, Dusty Garner (2016) and BJ Henkel (2014)
Joyce was one of the original telephone operators at the Illinois Bell office in Vandalia. She loved her family and all her children. Joyce will always be known for her love for dancing. She was very active and could always be seen riding her bike or taking walks around town with all the neighborhood children who followed her. She will always be remembered for spending New Year’s Eve with her great-grandchildren. She was of the Methodist faith.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend visiting hours from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Day Macz Funeral Home in Patoka, IL. A graveside service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Vernon Cemetery with Pastor David Rogers officiating. The family ask in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions in Joyce’s memory be made to Vernon Cemetery.
