BANGOR and BUCKSPORT, ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., COLUMBUS, OH and surrounding areas - John Richard "Mac" McAvoy, an honorable solider and loyal family man of Irish decent, departed this world on Aug. 6, 2005, in Westerville, Ohio, at the age of 79. Mac was born in Bangor, Aug. 31, 1925, the youngest of Patrick McAvoy and Emma Simpson's 10 children. Spending most of his childhood and teenage years in Bucksport. Serving honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II including the Normandy Invasion, U.S. Army in the Korean War and active duty in Vietnam, decorated with over 15 medals during his 26 years of dedicated service to his country. He retired from the armed forces in 1968 and then resided in Columbus, Ohio, and the surrounding area. Mac was predeceased by his parents, two sisters and five brothers, his loving wife of 25 years, Mary Margaret "Sis" Wein-McAvoy (1925-1985). They are survived by: their two children, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" McAvoy of Westerville, OH, and John Douglas McAvoy of Newark, OH; daughter-in-law, Mary Pieramico-McAvoy; granddaughters, Patricia Marie McAvoy and Elizabeth Margaret McAvoy; sisters, Marguerite McAvoy-Lyons of Lowell, Mass., and Dorothy McAvoy-Robshaw and brother-in-law, Linwood Robshaw, of Orland; several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and fellow soldiers.
