German-Austrian Artist. He was well known for his portrayals of portraits and battle scenes. The son of a n enamel painter, in 1799 he was sent to live with an aunt in Vienna, Austria, and enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts where he studied under artist Heinrich Füger. After spending some time in Paris, France to further advance his skills, he returned to Vienna in 1805 and established himself as a portrait painter. In 1813 he became a member of the Academy and five years later he was appointed a professor there. In 1828, he was named Director of the Galerie Belvedere, a position he held until his death, and in 1835 he became an Academic Counselor. Among his well-known works include a portrait of Archduchess Clementina of Austria, a portrait of a young Napoleon II (1818), the Battle of Leipzig, The Siege of Szigetvár, and an equestrian portrait of Holy Roman Emperor Francis II. He died at the age of 76. His brother, Joseph Krafft, was known for his painting of portrait miniatures.
