He was born January 14, 1941, at Durango, Colorado, the son of John and Emma Dicke Smith. Jerry was raised and attended school in Colorado. The family moved to Farmington, New Mexico, where he continued his education before entering the military, serving with the United States Navy. After his discharge he worked in the oil fields in Utah and New Mexico.
Jerry met his future wife, Sonja M. Ledington, in Blanding, Utah, and on October 23, 1961, they married at Cortes, Colorado. The couple moved to Spray, Oregon, and he worked at Kinzua Pine Mill in Kinzua. When the mill closed at Kinzua they moved to Heppner where he continued to work at the Kinzua Mill there. Jerry also worked for Randy Lott as an electrician and at the Shirley Rugg Sheep Ranch.
He enjoyed working in his yard, doing wood work, trips to the mountains and riding his 4-wheeler as well as hunting and fishing. Jerry was a member of the T.O.C. woodworkers union.
Survivors include daughters Vicki Rayburn of Heppner and Rebecca Peray-Genovese of Renton, Washington; daughter-in-law Maryellen Smith of Post Falls, Idaho; sisters Charlene White of Aztec, New Mexico, and Evelyn Barrett of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife Sonja and a son, Randy Smith.
