Dexter's parents are James Zackwill Cochran (1840 to 1908) and Catherine Allie Denney (1856 to 1943). They had eleven children: Zackquill E. "Zack" (1876 to ?), Mary Elizabeth m. Gordon Frederick Jackson (1878 to 1972), William Denney (1880 to after 1942), Temperance Folly m. Guy Franklin Walter (1882 to 1948), Dexter Ernest (1885 to 1960), Joseph Richard (1886 to 1942), Clinton Beverly (1889 to 1980), Carrie Drusilla (1891 to after 1942), Ruby Catherine m. Norton Johnson (1893 to after 1942), James Van Buren (1896 to 1971), Maxwell A. (1898 to 1973).

1900 census: James L. (age 59) and Allie (age 34) lived in Middleville Township (south half), Wright, Minnesota. Also in household children: Temperance (age 18), Dexter E. (age 15), Joseph R. (age 13), Clinton B. (age 11), Carrie D. (age 9), James V. (age 4), Ruby (age 7) and Max (age 2).


On July 2, 1914 Dexter (age 29) and Estelle/Stella Buckley (age 28) were married by a Catholic Priest. The ceremony took place in Hennepin County in the State of Minnesota.


On September 7, 1918 Dexter (age 33) registered for the World War I draft. At the time he was living at 2023 Pierce St. in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa. His employment was as a Traveling Salesman for the Hansen Glass and Paint Company. Dexter was of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair. Nearest relative: Mrs. D. E. Cochran of 2023 Pierce St.


1925 Iowa census: Dexter (age 39) and wife Estella E. (age 39) lived in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa.


The marriage of Dexter and Estella ended in divorce.


1930 census: Dexter (age 42) lived with his brother (head of household) Maxwell A. (age 31) and his wife Helen V. (age 31) and their adopted son Edward (age 4). Family lived in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa. Dexter and Maxwell were salesmen of wholesale paints.


U. S. City Directory, residence year 1932: Dexter E. and Dorothy Cochran lived at 815 Jackson, apt. 2 in Sioux City, Iowa. Dexter's occupation was Salesman.


1940 census: Dexter (age 54) and wife Dorothy (age 48) lived in Area D, Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa. Also in household was Harold Jones (age 27) and Fern Jones (age 19). Harold and Fern are children from Dorothy's first marriage. Lived same place in 1935.


On April 27, 1942 Dexter (age 56) registered for the World War II draft in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa. His complexion was ruddy, 5' 7", 165 pounds, blue eyes and gray hair. He was employed by the Hansen Glass and Paint Company. Relative's name: M. A. Cochran.


It doesn't appear that Dexter had any children of his own, only raising step-children from Dora's first marriage.

DEXTER COCHRAN

Dexter E. Cochran, 74, 3007 Center street, a salesman for Hansen Glass and Paint Co. for 43 years, died Monday at his home after a heart attack. Mr. Cochran was born August 27, 1885 at Minneapolis and resided in Sioux City for 45 years. He married Dorothy Hatfield February 22, 1931 at Elk Point, S. D. Survivors include the widow; a son, Harold of Sioux City; four daughters, Mrs. Etta Tucker of Sioux City, Mrs. Gladys Iwerks of Issaquah, Wash., Mrs. Bernice Toby of Pinole, Cal., and Mrs. Fern Johnson in Germany; four brothers, Maxwell Cochran of Riverside Cal., William Cochran of Phoenix, Ariz., Van Cochran of Minneapolis and Clint Cochran in Georgia; two sisters, Mrs. May Jackson of Winona, Minn., and Mrs. Ruby Johnson of Minneapolis; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The Nelson-Berger north side funeral home has charge of arrangements.

Funeral Services for Dexter E. Cochran, 74, 3007 Center street, for 43 years a Hansen Glass and Paint Co. salesman who died Monday at his residence, will be at 2 p. m. Thursday at the Nelson Berger north side funeral home. Rev. Richard L. Pearson of Crescent Park Methodist church will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial park cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert Nelson, W. J. O'Dea, John Hall, W. L. Davis, John Kuiper and Donald Higgins. Honorary pallbearers will be L. S. Wernli, jr., E. R. Long, E. W. Klempnauer, Donald Barnes, W. D. Haas and Kenneth W. O'Hara.


Note: Dexter's brother Joseph died November 8, 1942. Joseph had six brothers. His obituary notes he was survived by five brothers and four sisters. It's this contributors belief that his brother Zack may have died young as he disappears after the 1895 census when he was 18 years of age. All other siblings lived past 1942.


There is a Zackquill Cochran Cemetery located in Reader, Wetzel County, West Virginia. The only burial there is a Zackquell Cochran (1774 to 1811). Among Dexter's descendants are the names James, Temperance, Drusilla, and Zackquill. Dexter's father James was born in West Virginia. Zackquell Cochran is Dexter's Great-Great-Grandfather. His Great-Great Grandmother is Drusilla, she is buried at the Middleville Road Cemetery in Maple Lake, Harrison, West Virginia along with five other decendants of Dexter's.
