Herbert Myers, 85, of Manteno, IL and formerly of Mannington Loop died Friday evening on March 31, 2017 at the Illinois Veterans Home.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home in Crofton with the Rev. Ron Henn officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgetop Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from Noon until the funeral hour. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home in Crofton is in charge of the arrangements.

A native of Dolton, IL he was born December 2, 1931 the son of the late Herbert Myers Sr. and Nela (Blanchette) Myers. He lived on farms in Illinois as a boy and graduated from Peotone High School. He married Alice Kruse on June 14, 1952 in Markham, Illinois. He was the oldest of five siblings and leaves behind many nieces and nephews who called him “Uncle Sonny” as Sonny was his family name.

Herb was a proud veteran and served as the commander for the American Legion in Monee, Illinois in the 1960’s. He was a mechanic and loved working on his own cars and he raced stock cars for a short time in his 20’s. He retired from the IC Railroad and also retired from working at the Illinois Veterans Home as a cook and switchboard operator. He and his wife, Alice, moved to Kentucky 20 years ago after he retired. In Kentucky they both enjoyed singing and playing music at their church and Herb worked in his garden.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Alice Kruse Myers; and his sister: Carol Furst.

Survivors include his daughters: Janine Tipsord(Robert), Nanette Myers, and Rebecca Myers; his son: Anthony Myers; his brothers: Howard Myers, Duane Myers and Richard Myers; his grandchildren: Jeremy Myers and Jessica Tipsord(Andrew Schreiber); and his great granddaughter: Hailey Schreiber.
