Elizabeth Shafer

Elizabeth I. Shafer, 84, of Mount Pleasant, died at 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Nov. 23, 1916, in Prairie Grove, she was the daughter of Joseph and Elsie Bauer Westerbeck. She married Clarence E.J. "Jake" Shafer on Nov. 9, 1932, in Quincy, Ill. He died March 7, 1960.

Mrs. Shafer worked at Harlan Hotel dining room as a waitress for several years, in the dietary department at Henry County Health Center and also worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown. She retired in 1988, after 17 years as a psychiatric aide at the Mental Health Institute in Mount Pleasant.

She was of the Protestant faith and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2561 Auxiliary.

Survivors include one son, Clifford C. Shafer of Rome; three daughters, Delores J. Booton and Evelyn I. Beavers, both of Mount Pleasant, and Patricia K. Morrow of Fontana, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one brother, Marlin Westerbeck of Holiday, Fla.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, three grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and two brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Shafer will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Crossroads Hospice and VFW Post 2561 Auxiliary.
