Her mother married Warren G Otto Sr about 1934. She, older brother Eugene Jr and half sisters Caroline and Patricia Otto were raised by her mother and stepfather. Helen and Eugene Jr spoke well of their stepfather but also maintained a close relationship with their father. Helen married Lamar Dennis in the late 1940s. They had two childen, Marty and Gina. Helen was a devout Jehovah's Witness and her life was guided by her faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Gina, brother Gene and sister Pat. Her obituary was published in the Birmingham News on 2 Oct 2016.
