Vern Meeks, 96, Nappanee, passed away Friday, June 1, at Wellbrooke Senior Living Westfield, at 7:45 p.m.
He was born Aug. 8, 1921, in Ward, Arkansas, to David and Vera (Merle) Meeks. He was raised in the Detroit, Michigan, area before moving to Nappanee in 1952. He was a graduate of Albion College in Michigan and attended graduate school at the University of Michigan.
He worked at Mutschler Brothers in Nappanee and was an area-based manager for Steelcase Contract Furniture based in Atlanta. In 1966, he became an independent representative for multiple manufacturers of office furniture covering Illinois, Wisconsin and northern Indiana. He retired in 1980.
Vern also served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant senior grade during World War II, where he served two years on the ammunition ship, "Lassen," and also was in China on the destroyer Escort.
Vern was a member of the Nappanee United Methodist Church, a past president of the Nappanee Kiwanis Club and a member and past president of the Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity at Albion College.
He married Eloise Method Dec. 29, 1946, at Nappanee United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death Oct. 25, 2012.
Surviving is a daughter, Melissa (Harry Stackouse) Meeks of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by his wife; daughter Melodee Meeks Rosen; and brother, Merritt R. Meeks.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 7, from 1-3 p.m. until the 3 p.m. funeral service, all at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Pastor Janet McFall-Brown will officiate.
Burial will follow at Baintertown Cemetery in New Paris, with military graveside services performed by the Nappanee American Legion.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Nappanee United Methodist Church.
