Rodney Rudell Rowley, 89, of Hillsdale, and formerly of Alverda, died Sunday, March 26, 2017, at AristaCare at Hillsdale Park in Hillsdale.
The son of Harry James and Pansy Ola (Nicholson) Rowley, he was born on Feb. 18, 1928, in Clymer.
Rodney attended Green Township High School for nine years. His favorite saying was he “quituated” in 9th grade to work on the Montgomery Farm.
He was a member of the Cookport Baptist Church.
Rodney served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict with the 6013 ASU Mess Detachment in Fort Lawton, Wash.
Rodney was a member of the UMWA #1269 of Bakerton and the former American Legion Post #0936 in Heilwood.
His hobbies included spending time on auto repairs and attending country music concerts. It must be stated that one of his primary interests was Ford automobiles and Ford ONLY! He also enjoyed camping.
Rodney began his working career at C.L. Himes Construction of Cherry Tree, before being employed at McGill Motors in Indiana. Rodney next worked as a mechanic and a PA State inspector of vehicles at William Kirsch’s Garage in Nicktown. For many years, he was the owner and operator of Rowley Service in Alverda.
Rodney began his coal career working as a mechanic and roof bolter with Barnes and Tucker prior to his 20-year employment with the Valley Coal Company, from which he retired in 1992.
Even in his retirement, he worked as the supervisor at the Alverda Water Company.
Rodney wed Joyce M. (Beer) Rowley on Sept. 27, 1953. They shared over 49 years of marriage together until her death on March 18, 2003.
He is survived by his four children: Nola Thompson and husband Douglas, of Marion Center; Rhonda Davis and fianc← James S. Woods, of Alverda; Rickie Rowley and wife Donna (Burkes), of Coalgate, Okla.; and Brenda Abrams and husband Terry Sr., of Cherry Tree; six grandchildren: Raeann Davis and husband James; Tony Ackley and husband Ryan; Julieann Wentz and husband Ryan; Dana Walter and husband Joe; Joshua Brawley; and Molly Ann Clymer and husband Tim; and six great-grandchildren: Derrick Davis, Lydia Davis, Chase Wentz, Mazzy Wentz, Greycen Walter and Liam Clymer.
Rodney was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son, Cpl. Rodney William Rowley; his two granddaughters, Tara Nicole Thompson and Toni Michelle Thompson; and his brother, Harry Charles “Chuck” Rowley.
Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Rairigh Funeral Home Ltd., in Hillsdale, where an 11 a.m. funeral service will be held on Thursday with the Rev. Prewitt Duncan officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Clymer American Legion Post #222. Interment will take place at McDowell Cemetery in Green Township, Indiana County.
