Helen May (Stalker) Vance, 91, of rural Loda passed away at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Paxton.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 2, 2017, at the Loda United Methodist Church, 200 S. Locust Street, Loda with Pastor Rachel Stockle officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Farmer City. Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the Loda United Methodist Church.

Helen was born May 27, 1925 in Farmer City the daughter of Bert and Mary (Hoffman) Stalker. She married Wilfred E. “Bill” Vance on February 2, 1946 at Weedman Methodist Church near Farmer City. He preceded her in death on October 27, 1999.

She is survived by five sons and one daughter, Steven (Carolyn) Vance of Peoria, Dennis (Cindy) Vance of Buckley, Dolores (Dale) Genzel of Wentzville, Missouri, Martin (Janet) Vance of Loda, Richard (Debbie) Vance of rural Paxton, Gary (Barb) Vance of Loda; 15 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and 1 sister-in-law, Chris Stalker of Champaign.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Ruth Rupp and Dorothy Lawson; three brothers, George Stalker, Richard Stalker and Lynn Stalker.

Helen attended rural school in Farmer City and graduated from Moore Twp. High School, Farmer City. After attending high school she worked at the Farmer City State Bank and then became a homemaker and worked in home healthcare in Paxton for several years. She moved from Farmer City to Loda in 1951.

She was a member of the Loda United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and at one time taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was a former board member of the Cunningham Children’s Home in Urbana and a long-time member of the Be Friendly Club, Loda. She had also delivered Meals on Wheels.

Helen enjoyed gardening, working with both flowers and vegetables, cooking, playing Scrabble, writing letters and sending cards. Her most enjoyable time was spent with her family.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Paxton Heartland Healthcare for the compassionate care given to Helen over the past 6 ½ years.
