YARMOUTH - Evelyn "Evie" Lorraine Yates, 90, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2017, at the Hawthorne House in Freeport.

Evelyn was born in Portland on August 3, 1926, the daughter of Harry and Alice (Darling) Morton.

"Evie" was born and raised in Yarmouth, one of 11 children who originally lived on the Morton Road that was named after her father, Harry Morton, who built the first house on the street.

Evie was a graduate of North Yarmouth Academy.

After graduation, Evie worked at the old sardine cannery on the Royal River. After she left the sardine cannery, she went to work at Nissen's Bakery in Portland, Rustic Restaurant, and Howdy Doody Restaurant, eventually retiring and working as a private housekeeper during her retirement.

On July 26, 1950, Evie married the love of her life, Lawrence Wilbur Yates, in the front room of her parent's home on Morton Road.

They eventually bought a house on Pleasant Street in Yarmouth, where they lived for 64 years and raised their family.

Evie was an avid dancer (who won awards for the jitterbug) and baker; loved boating; and enjoyed her annual trips to Amish country in Pennsylvania with her husband and son.

She is survived by her son Michael Yates and his companion Cindi Lahaye, of Freeport; daughter Sharon Snow and husband Michael, of Portland; grandchildren, Amy and Geoff Arris, Melissa and Ned O'Connor, Chad Yates, and Spencer and Samantha Snow; great-grandchildren, Serena, Caleb, Chloe, and Nola; a sister, Carolyn Talbot, of Tolland, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Evie was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence; sibling, Sandy, Elise, Harry, Fred, Frances, Nathan, Natalie, Nancy, and John; and nephews, John Morton and Robert Davis.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Hawthorne House, in Freeport, for their superior care and loving support of Evie.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 31, 2017, from 2-3pm at LINQUIST FUNERAL HOME, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, with a service starting at 3pm.
