Friedrich was born in Holstein (now called Verkhnyaya Kulaninka), Volgograd, Russia. His father was Friedrich Hildermann. Friedrich Jr. married Christine Grauberger. In September of 1899 they emigrated to Winnipeg, MB. Their two sons, John George and Reinhard, and their wives came along. Rheinhard also brought two children, Eva and Jacob, but Jacob died enroute to Canada. They travelled by cattle boat, ships, and trains, and arrived in Winnepeg in November.

Friedrich was a carpenter, and while in Winnipeg he made saw horses. His sons split and sawed wood for $5 - $10 a cord. The women did laundry for Jewish families. In the spring of 1900 Friedrich went to Yorkton SK. to apply for two homesteads. In 1902 the whole family moved to the Rhein area.

Friedrich and Reinhard homesteaded and farmed 1 1/4 miles north of Rhein. They built a shack with a cellar, in which they lived temporarily, and began clearing the land. They built a 1 1/2 story house, large enough for about 10 people to live in. They used logs obtained from their farm, and hauled some from the Togo area with horses and a sleigh in the winter time.
