Peter Stanislaus Little was born in Monkstown, Co Dublin on October 20, 1874. His father, Philip Francis, was the retired Premier of Newfoundland and a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland. His mother was Mary Jane Holdright of Dublin. He was one of 13 children. He died as a teenager in 1890 while attending Clongowes Wood College near Clane, Co Kildare. Death resulted from pneumonia, which he contracted after following the hunt out over the Bog of Allen on a rainy day. His death is cited by James Joyce in "A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man": "Then he [Joyce] would have a dead mass in the chapel like the way the fellows had told him it was when Little had died".
