Mary Lou was born in Winner to Jacob and Helen Smith, one of nine children. As a young adult Mary Lou lived in Bonesteel, SD, and Valentine, NE, where she met and married Wayne "Red" Carrier in 1955.
Shortly thereafter they moved to Rapid City, where she raised five children. For many years she assisted her husband Red, who owned and operated several liquor stores.
Though she often took seasonal jobs, Mary Lou was a devoted mother and grandmother, dedicating her life to her family. She loved Rapid City and took pride in spending time with her family in Canyon Lake Park as well as never turning down an opportunity to dance on a Saturday night.
Mary Lou is survived by her two sons, Larry and Lon; three daughters, Bev, Wanda and Vickie; 14 grandchildren; a brother; and a sister. She was preceded in death by her husband, Red; six siblings; and her parents.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, officiated by Pastor Bob Duemig. Following will be an informal gathering with location to be announced at time of service.
