Rosary was recited at Sunday and Mass of Resurrection was celebrated Monday, May 19 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fairfield with Rev. William Dornbos officiating. Interment was at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Fairfield. He died at the Teton Nursing Home in Choteau. Son of Peter and Rosa Baggenstoss Dirkes. He grew up and attended school in Richardton, N.D. In 1915, he moved to Montana when his mother homesteaded near Power. Married Rose Marie Hanson on Dec. 31, 1927 at Billings. They made their home on a farm at Power, moved to Fairfield in 1936 and established a locker and meat processing plant. Later they added a grocery department which evolved into Dirkes’ Market. Mrs. Dirkes died March 26, 1964. He married Pearl Bjork Willits March 4, 1966 at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He was active in community and civic affairs. Member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department for more than 20 years, and was a musician with several local Fairfield bands, including his own group known as the “Rythmaires.” He was a Fairfield baseball player and enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl; two daughters, Mrs. Erich E. (LaVerne) Keiper of Fairfield, and Mrs. J.R. (Lois) Crabtree of Choteau; a step-son, Richard Willits of Renton, Wash.; a brother, Jake Dirkes of Fairfield; seven grandchildren; two step-grandsons; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.—Information from obituary in The Choteau Acantha, May 22, 1986, Pg. 8
