ABINGDON, Va. Virginia L. Greer Abel, age 86, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2017, in Abingdon, Virginia. She was born October 17, 1930, in Alvarado, Va., a daughter of the late George and Mary Jane Rhoten Greer. Virginia worked for Raytheon and Hecks while in Virginia and then moved to Graham, N.C., in 1987 to work for SCI. She retired in 1995 and returned home to Abingdon, Virginia. Virginia loved to garden and quilt. She was famous for her Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, cathedral window quilts and delicious caramel cakes. She had a love for all flowers but especially African violets and orchids. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought her so much happiness. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph "June" Abel Jr.; brothers, Hobart, Clarence, Edgar, J.C. and Dean Greer; sisters, Ora Booher, Willie Rogers and Mattie Greer; son-in-law, Phil Lucas; and many loving Abel brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law who were so much like her own brothers and sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Pat Keene and husband, Glenn, and Jane Lucas; two sons, Kevin Abel and Tommy Abel and wife, Sue; one daughter-in-law, Donna Ann Abel; grandchildren, Donna Shields and husband, Joseph, Carolyn Keene, Nick Abel, Erin Halsey and husband, Jonathan, Brad Abel, Mallory Smith and husband, Josh, Justin Abel, and Cameron Abel and wife, Azen; great-grandchildren, Jayla, Brenna, Brady, Davin, Lainey, and Wade. Virginia Abel was also survived by seven sisters-in-law, Carol Greer, Margaret Greer, Sue Gibson and husband, John, Katherine Saul and husband, Pat, Nancy Abel, Ann Abel, and Bonnie Abel; one brother-in-law, Bill Abel and wife, Gay; as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Green Spring Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jon Martin and the Rev. Tim Stevens officiating. The graveside service will follow in Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, March 28, 2017, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Frost Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Tommy Abel, Kevin Abel, Nick Abel, Brad Abel, Justin Abel, Joseph Shields, Jonathan Halsey and Josh Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be Glenn Keene, Ronnie Rogers, Preston Brown, Irvin Brown, Damon Boyd, Bill Abel, Eric Greer and Jerry Jones. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 22007 Green Spring Church Rd., Abingdon, VA 24211.
