Her father, John, was killed in a sawmill accident on July 24, 1943, leaving his 9 month pregnant widow Becky, alone to raise their three children. Their daughter Sarah was 7, and Martha Ellen was 5. Their only son, John Allen was born 11 days later. The three children were later made wards of Becky's 2nd husband, William H. Mapes.
Martha Ellen married Henry Beacher Ward in Fayette County, Illinois, after getting their marriage license on Nov. 17, 1855, in Clinton County, Illinois.
Their first daughter, Mary Elizabeth, was born March 11, 1856 in Champaign,Illinois.
By 1858, Martha and Henry had moved their growing family to Missouri. They were living in Kansas City, when they sold her inheritance from her father's estate on Aug. 24, 1859.
They were living there when their 2nd daughter, Hattie A., was born in 1859.
They moved to Franklin County, Kansas,about 1861. Martha Ellen died in April, 1862, following the birth of their 3rd daughter Margaret Ellen. She was 24 years old.
