Mustered in, 1861, for Civil War service as a Lieutenant Colonel of the , 2nd US Volunteer Sharpshooters Regiment and promoted Colonel of the Regiment, January 1, 1862. He was wounded at the Battle of Antietam . He returned to his Regiment which was now part of the Army of the Potomac. He was placed on detached service and discharged November 16, 1862.

He went to Cincinnati in 1864 becoming a partner in Perkins, Livingston & Post. Then establishing a manufacturing business for railroad supplies, Post & Co. Returning to New York he established Post, Martin & Co. and Post & Pomeroy. He was the owner of American Equipment Co., NYC, ( locomotive and car building, along with financiers of railroad supplies ).
